4 Visit: Panteón María Victoria de Rascón y Anduaga
In this beautiful and simple sarcophagus we can read an inscription that says the date of birth and death of the person buried in it: “Here lies Mary Victoria Rascón y Anduaga”. The family pantheon dedicated to her stands out for the beautiful sculpture that crowns it. It contains a symbol normally found in cemeteries: an angel with a trumpet that announces the Last Judgement. The exquisite carving of the wings stand out. The hair has been represented with great beauty. On the forehead a star rises. The dress is elegantly wrapped around the body and the folds and very well done. The angel looks down, where Maria Victoria young is buried , while her hand points to heaven. All the sculpture gives a feeling of movement. In the fence that surrounds the pantheon we find some of the most recurrent funeral symbols: the scythe that represents death that everything comes together, the torch symbolizes purification, and when down indicates death and sand clock with wings that implies how fast life goes (tempus fugit). Rascón County was established in the person of the holder of the pantheon, Juan Antonio Rascón Navarro Seña y Redondo, nineteenth-century Spanish diplomat who travelled through much of Europe. He was a life senator and a councillor for Alicante and Puerto Rico.
