25 Visit: Panteón Marquesa de Conde-Salazar
The cemetery erected by the Marquesa de Conde-Salazar, María del Socorro Conde-Salazar y Acosta is one of the most spectacular in the cemetery. The neoclassical style prevails. The monument is reminiscent of styles from the Roman world, such as garlands and medallion. On the pediment we can see the date of construction and the portrait of the Marquesa, and a garland of daisies and old roses. The vegetation elements in the pantheon can be identified with symbols of fertility, rebirth to eternal life and hope. The dome is made with tiles in the shape of laminas. The windows, with different colours and the skylight give the interior an atmosphere of serenity and beauty. There is a strong presence of triangular and pyramidal shaped motifs. Even though it cannot be viewed from outside, the inner sarcophagus is beautifully crafted. In the garden, surrounded by an iron fence, we can see the traditional funerary symbolism of the torch, and trees of the Sofora Pendulum species. The mausoleum was built, according to the “Diario de Cordoba “ newspaper(16-3-1873), by the architect Amadeo Rodríguez in collaboration with the Italian stonecutter José del Nero . The Marquesa dedicated the building to her husband, Francisco García Hidalgo Peñalver, minister and life senator of the Tribunal of Accounts of the Kingdom during the reign of Isabel II. The remains of José María Conde Acosta, first mayor of Cordoba in 1844-46 and vice-mayor in 1853 also lie here.
